SHARP WINS PRESTIGIOUS 'EXCELLENCE IN PARTNERSHIP GREEN CONTRACTOR AWARD' FOR 2007 FROM U.S. GENERAL SERVICES ADMINISTRATION

Federal recognition for leadership in environmental manufacturing and business practices

MAHWAH, NJ, December 12, 2007 -- Reinforcing the company’s commitment to the environment, Sharp Corporation announced today that it received the Excellence in Partnership Green Contractor Award from the Coalition for Government Procurement and the U.S. Government’s General Services Administration. The Green Contractor Award is granted to the government contractor who has demonstrated the strongest overall commitment to environmentally sound manufacturing and operating procedures.

“Sharp is dedicated to developing environmentally conscious products and services, while conducting business in an environmentally responsible way” said Toshihiko Fujimoto, CEO and Chairman of Sharp Electronics Corporation, the U.S. sales and marketing subsidiary of Sharp Corporation. “Our commitment to becoming an environmentally advanced company can be seen in various initiatives across the globe.”

Sharp Electronics Corporation works closely with the GSA to provide appropriate products and services for the Federal Government as well as state and local government agency procurement. The GSA has been promoting adoption of green products and practices throughout 2007. The Green Contractor award is one of only five awards available to industry groups and among the most competitive category in terms of nominations.

“Sharp was chosen because of the significant strength of its nomination,” states Larry Allen, president of the Coalition for Government Procurement. “Sharp’s application demonstrated a thorough company-wide commitment to environmentally responsible practices including recycling in the manufacturing process and energy efficient products.”

Global Commitment to the Environment
Sharp is committed to becoming an environmentally advanced company. The company aims to reduce its worldwide greenhouse gas emissions by fiscal 2010, with the quantity of greenhouse gases emitted that year equaling the quantity of greenhouse gases avoided through the use of Sharp energy-saving products and the use of the solar cells Sharp has sold during the previous 20 years.

As the world’s leading manufacturer of solar cells, Sharp’s focus is to further the development and use of solar electricity. Sharp is also a world leader in LCD TVs, which are more energy efficient than CRT TVs. Sharp’s AQUOS line of LCD TVs is known for long life and Sharp uses green, recyclable materials wherever possible in the construction of the televisions.

Sharp’s Generation 8 LCD panel plant in Kameyama, Japan, is one of the world’s most environmentally friendly factories, employing the world’s largest (5150KW) rooftop photovoltaic power system, cogeneration systems and fuel cells, to supply about one-third of total electrical power used in the plant. The entire LCD TV manufacturing process - from fabricating the LCD panels to final assembly - is carried out in a single plant, eliminating the need to ship sub-assemblies between distant plants. This enables Sharp to slash the amount of packaging materials required for shipping while reducing emissions. The plant also uses a water purifying system in which 100 percent of the water expelled by the factory is recycled.

The Sharp legacy of environmental responsibility was also recently recognized by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which awarded Sharp its “SmartWay Excellence Award” for conserving energy and lowering greenhouse gas emissions from transportation and freight activities. Sharp was one of the first members of the SmartWay Transport Partnership, which was created by the Environmental Protection Agency in 2004 as a voluntary alliance that establishes incentives for fuel efficiency improvements and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. By 2012, this initiative aims to reduce between 33 and 66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions and up to 200,000 tons of nitrogen oxide emissions per year.
